One of my favorites is: Notes From the Universe by Mike Dooley. Not an actual "yoga" book. But well worth reading everyday, again and again.
On the other subject...staying well. In my morning glass or water I take a drop or 2 of a top grade essential oil blend called "Thieves" by Young Living. I teach Kindergarten part-time, so you know I'm exposed to everything know to man everyday. Between caring for my body with the oils, healthy whole foods, exercise (yoga & walking) and keeping my thoughts on at a high vibration (gratitude, joy, love, etc.) I don't get sick. I haven't spend a day in bed in more years that I can remember. And the Thieves has helped to keep the even the little sniffles away. I use the oils daily not only for wellness but for everything from keeping fleas & ticks off my pets, cleaning my house, treating kitchen burns, to sleeping better at night. You name it, there's an essential oil(s) for it. Great stuff!
(note If you think you're going to get sick...guess what?....you'll get sick. Gotta work on those beliefs too.)

What yoga book should I take with me
I would have to take my yoga bible, Light On Yoga, B.K.S. Iyengar. It has every possible asana, plus bhandas, kriyas, and panayama techniques. This was a no brainer for me. Jess

Yoga of Heart
Ask Sara to lend you her copy of "Yoga of Heart" by Mark Whitwell. I remember her mentioning it in passing in one of the newsletters. She'd only glanced through it at the time and I've been hoping for a more thorough review ever since!
This book has the power to profoundly change your yoga. Mark encourages everyone to make yoga their own, personal, authentic practice. He reminds you that you, and your yoga, are perfect just the way yoga are now. Which is great news for all us type A personalities struggling to get somewhere (on or off the mat). Beyond the mat, Mark demonstrates very clearly how yoga is about body, breath and - hark, hark - relationship. A real eye-opener, very pertinent and frequently hilarious in the way it debunks social myths.

I would recommend Stephen Cope's Yoga and the Quest for the True Self.
It reads like a novel, and talks about Stephen's spiritual journey at Kripalu, a Yoga center in Western Massachusetts.
He writes with elegance, simplicity, and humor.
Another book of his, The Wisdom of Yoga- A Seeker's Guide to Extraordinary Living is kind of a sequel, and is just as readable, just as elegant, but is more specific, and brings the ancient yoga teachings into the present day easily, and practically.
Harlan, I hope your vacation is about a year long so you can read everyone's suggestions.
Enjoy.

My book I would choose
Well since being ill, with a cold, then flu, then a chest infection, it has forced me to stop and read for a change. In this time I have found a book I had forgotten was on my shelf. Funny I picked it up and it felt familiar, like I had read it before but I know I have not. In that way this book chose itself for me to read whilst ill. It is: Yoga, Youth and Reincarnation - by Jess Stearn. A thought provoking but easy read. It can lead off to many meditations, so on a desert island, (which I feel I have been on for the past month with illness) this book will be a good read.

My Deserted Island Yoga Book
I always get some snippet of info out of any yoga book, so usually I would just take the book I was currently reading. I have just discovered a great book that would come with me - "Emotional Yoga" Bija Bennett.

Just One Yoga Book
If you are going on a short trip and want just one book to read that is not asana-based, then I highly recommend "Light on Life" by BKS Iyengar. Such a great insightful book and its a light read compared to the yoga sutras etc. I just plowed right through it while I was travelling. Loved every word of it.

one yoga book
Namaste
The one yoga book that I would take on a deserted island is, "Ancient Secrets of the Fountain of Youth", book two.
A good movie, although not about yoga, is Conversations with God. To put things into focus.
Much Love
