Hi Harlan,
I've listened to about 35 minutes of the talk (put it on pause, till I get more time...busy mom of four), and I like the idea of the certificate. Tonight in a class that is a strength class, I'm going to do a very challenging class, and at the end I'm going to pass out certificates to those who have attended. Do I put a name on the certificate, as they come in the door, or make the certificate in a way, that I don't need a name? Or do I do the thing, how do you want your name spelled, so that I get it correct on the award? I'm trying to build up the numbers in this class, and I think that this is a nice strategy to help that along. Any other thoughts in building up numbers in a class? gaileee Gail Pickens-Barger, RYT (Prenatal, Fibromyalgia, arthritis, chair, flow, pregnancy, Nederland Tx, Beaumont Texas, Port Arthur Texas Last edited by gaileee : 09-20-2007 at 08:59 AM. Hi Harlan,
I've been away from the forum for a little while, really busy with setting up the classes and was glad to get your email and listen to the call. The strategies you shared about asking for referrals, and giving us word for word what to say is very helpful, thank you. That apply specifically well when working with privates, where you can be sincere in saying you love having clients like them and wish you had more clients like them, then asking for a referral. Now what would your ideas be on how to go about asking for referrals when teaching public classes? Would you still do it after the first or second class, and if so, how would you go about asking them to give you referrals. Specifically: What wording would you use? When would you do it, after the first or second class in a 14 week session? Would you recommend doing it through email personalized to them? How would you say it? Or would you say something to the whole group in class? How would you say it? Obviously it may be difficult to this in person one on one, and be truthful when you say to each one, that you’d love to have more clients like you, can you refer me to your friends, like we can do for a private. Although there are some strategies, which have been working for me to build relationships and referrals with clients to keep clients to stick, yet I have yet to perfect the art of asking for referrals and I want to improve on what I had been doing. This question of how to ask for referrals in the right way with group classes, has always been of growing interest to me. I’d love to hear your advice on this. Peace, Jason

This is timely, because I've just completed my second class for the session this week.
I'll also share with you what I was thinking about doing. And, if you'd like, you can give your feedback on that. I had just sent out an email personalized to a list of students in one of my classes after the first class, asking them how they felt after the class and the following days. Letting them know I'd love to hear if they felt any benefits or anything they'd like to say and that I'd love to hear their comments. I got some responses with some nice feedback, some of which could even be used as testimonials. Now to follow that, I was thinking, that the timing is right (since you say ask for referrals in the beginning) to send another email, which might ask for referrals in a way that motivates them to do it. But I haven't written this yet and am not sure exactly how to ask it. I'd love to hear what advice you have to offer on how to do this process, how we might say it or write it, in a way that brings maximum results, before going further. Thank you. Harlan,
Thank you for the ideas around the business card. I had previous put the "The light in me, honors the light in you, Namaste'" wording on the back of the business card, and now I'm thinking....yeah, but those benefits on the back, plus a few testimonials. Great stuff! I sent to the most recent people who've come to my free will yoga class, a thank you for coming and a yoga posture chart for their personal reference. I guess my first throw at a welcome book. Gaileee

Some answers:
1. Regarding classes and certificates, you can have a certificate with a blank line for the name and call people up and the end of class and fill in the name with them right there. I am sure you can come up with a beautiful sacred ceremony to make everyone feel wonderful. 2. Regarding referrals in class: instructors who aren't rushing out to their next class should make time once a week or so to stay behind and talk with people about their yoga. Become approachable. Talk to people about their issues and you will be able to grow your business. More later. Peace. Harlan

Hi,
Near the end of the yoga free call, you and Marleen talked about briefly, the yoga pose card deck, and how you got it for 2-3 dollars, vs what one pays for retail. Where does one order that from to get such a deal? I also see that Marleen is also has a Google sponsored Ad. That is cool! Gaileee

My fellow yogi's & yogini's - can we please get back to the business of marketing? Listen, if you are secure in relation to your role as a yoga teacher...wonderful! If not, perhaps more training is in order. Like most of you, I am continually training and learning and growing. There is always more to know, more to learn and new ways of progressing. In any event, I would like to thank Sara and Harlan for their opinion and for all that they have taught me so far. Don't forget to breath consciously my friends - Namaste.
P/S - where can we get those decks at a discount? I am not sure if Gail's question was answered. |

You want to get those cards or other yoga books at a substantial discount
at www.bookdepot.com I just checked and they don't have any in stock right now. But I've used them for years and things come in to stock frequently. They have about 50 yoga items in stock. Some of the items listed under yoga don't have anything to do with yoga. There is a minimum order of 50 so you might want to team up with a friend unless you are buying for a bunch of classes. Peace. Harlan
