Why Doesn't Anyone Teach This?

Namaste Yogi's

After becoming pregnant, I began to obviously be interested in who was teaching pre-natal yoga in my area. My own practice quickly changed knowing that as my belly grew I would be limited to what I was able to do asana wise.

However I also knew with the changes of my body and a baby being formed inside of you, it is important to take certain precautions in how you are practicing and what postures you are doing.

I went to Barnes & Nobles  and to my surprise they didn’t have a single book on pre-natal yoga.

They also didn't carry any DVDs for pregnant women. Of course if you search on Amazon you could find a variety of yoga DVDs for pregnancy. When I began to check out classes that were available in my are for pregnant woman, I was even more surprise that there were next to none.

Most of the local yoga studios have no pre-natal yoga classes. I found only two people teaching these kind of classes. They were being held at a birthing centre nearby to where I live.

I was interested in finding a class I could attend so I could meet other mom’s who were expecting and be in an environment where I would be practicing one day a week in a group setting. Even though I love and cherish my private practice and yoga room, I desired to be led and meet new people.

The two people who are teaching classes hardly market themselves. They had a small flyer on a table inside the store of the birthing center.

Now in Miami, there are a few studios which have classes for pregnancy but it is 60 miles away.

I realized what a hidden market there is for pre and post natal yoga. It surprises me some of the studios do not want to add this kind of specialized class to their schedule. It is a fantastic market. Woman are always having babies and the word has gotten out that yoga is one of the best things you could do for exercise during your pregnancy.

So why isn’t anybody filling this open market and how come those who are teaching are not even marketing themselves?

My mother found me a yoga for pregnancy book at a second hand store and just sent it to me. It is a great book and has some terrific information in it, but it is over thirteen years old.

I went to a yoga class at an upscale hotel in Miami a few weeks ago. The teacher did not say a word to me about being pregnant, asked me no questions and gave me no modifications. It was good I am a yoga teacher and I had researched on my own things to modify and avoid while pregnant, because I would have been totally in the dark otherwise. I modified what I needed to and when it came to things I shouldn’t be doing I did my own thing.

Even if she didn’t know anything about pregnant yoga, I was very turned off at the fact she never even acknowledged me.

So since I am feeling good and I want to learn more and get more into this market myself, I decided to go to LA and do my pre and post natal yoga training with Shiva Rea next week. I thought it would be a great time to do it while I am pregnant.

I am looking forward to gaining more insight to how to create my practice in a way that is safe and nurturing for myself and my baby. When I come home, I will be excited to begin to share this information and tap into a new market.

If you are looking to broaden your teaching, or get into a new market…think about the possibility of getting certified in pre and post natal yoga training. It could be a hot market in your area to become the expert in. Food for thought.

Have a blessed week,
Enjoy being with all that flows to you,
Om Shanti,
Sara

Subject Line: Have A Pain Free Delivery

If you are pregnant (or know someone who is) this could be one of the most important messages you ever read.

Ob/Gyns, Midwives, and Mothers-to-be have been stunned by the research about how yoga eliminates the pain of labor and delivery.

The practice of yoga has many positive effects on pregnant women. Yoga includes physical stretching, mental centering and breath awareness. This makes it an ideal preparation for labor and childbirth.

Yoga encourages relaxation, internal focus and slowed breathing patterns, goals that are common in many types of childbirth preparation classes such as Lamaze.

Yoga may help relieve many of the common discomforts of pregnancy, such as lower back pain, nausea, insomnia, carpal tunnel syndrome and headaches.

Research suggests that yoga can help relax the body while preparing the muscles of the lower body for use in childbirth.

The breathing techniques used in yoga can help reduce or manage the shortness of breath that may accompany pregnancy and teach women how to breathe through physically challenging experiences such as labor.

Yoga encourages pregnant women to be mindful of the body's innate capacities and to recognize the connection among mind, body and breath. Yoga techniques also may be useful in promoting postpartum recovery and coping with the stresses of parenting.

Yoga during pregnancy is safe for most healthy women.
