Thoughts Off The Mat Greetings friends, What is this life all really about anyway? This week I have been pondering this question along with many others. How do we create our own happiness? What are we standing for in our lives? How do we get out of our dark moments and step into the light? What fears are arising that you may feel unsettled about? How do we satisfy our own loneliness? What gives you purpose in your life? Can you be present with what this moment brings? What does it truly mean to let go? There are answers to all these questions. You can go to Barnes & Nobles or Borders and pick up one of many self help books and leaf through it looking for words of solace and wisdom. You can have a huge selection of all the right books at home and refer to them time to time for that encouraging word. You can turn to your partner, close friend or family member and express yourself wholeheartedly. (Especially if you are a woman, we love to talk out our feelings. Maybe sometimes too much until we are chasing our own tail in circles.) Other times we throw the book out the window, turn off the phone and spend some quiet time alone. Our emotions and inner psyche are constantly on auto drive and at time we go out of balance. Yes.. it helps to express our selves! As human beings it is our nature to analyze people, situations and events and want answers or to create solutions. Sometimes what we really need to do is shut our mouths, go in a room by ourselves with a pen and paper and let it let the pen roam. Or maybe find a quiet secluded place and have a good deep cry or scream the loudest scream we have ever heard our self make. Only you know your remedy for release. This can be a scary place to explore if you are holding back. Discovering who you are and making the time to do this exploration may be the greatest gift to give yourself. Books are full of insight, and can give us so much to finding our way through life. But we all know how easy it is to read many spiritually enriching books, and when we are in a dark moment, you feel yourself clinging to this darkness. Every person in your life (the ones who stay and the temporary ones) have something to teach us. At times these lessons hurt like the worst pain your heart could feel, during this time you may not see the lesson but hiding beneath the surface it will eventually come to be known. Each situation or circumstance is an opportunity for us to see ourselves. How we are being, reacting and what we may be compromising. We all want peace and happiness. Is this achievable? We all want to be loved, to love and to feel fulfilled within our hearts and spirits. Our minds can be our best friend or our worst enemy. It is important to move into the loving compassion and essence of our hearts. Deep down in your own core, the place of your deepest self there dwells your best love and friend. It is yourself. This place inside of every one of you is calling to you. Let go and be willing to come home. In my life I am having to return form those dark moments to remember that I and no one else hold the torch to finding my light and acting from this illuminated space. When we step out of our familiar box of patterns, fear can present itself and challenges come and go. This is when inner growth blossoms and we soar to new peaks. You are the master of your happiness and the world in which you desire to create around you. All that you know to be true, hug and embrace this truth…..lay all your uncertainties on the cushion of your heart. Love yourself like no one else can and this love with be your guiding angel. Just like the path of yoga, who we are and who we aspire to be is a journey in itself. Most importantly find the humor in what life brings and surrender to accepting what is……Reflect on your journey so far and celebrate every step you have taken. We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aids, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn.-Henry David Thoreau With love, Om Namah Shivya Sara Two Amazing Videos Folks, I just had to share these videos with you. The first video is from Sheryl Crow's new album. The chorus of this video speaks to every yoga teacher. I hope you like it as much as I do.
The second video features two of the most important yoginis who share much more than Asana with their students. Both yoginis have developed a world wide reputation. Here they are together.
Inside Restoraflow This week, I got to see first hand a Restoraflow Sun Salutation. I injured my back some how and all of the massage and body work people I've seen disagree as to the exact nature of the problem. So Sara gave me an experiential view by taking me through a Sun Salutation designed to help lower back problems. By the end of the second round, my back was feeling much better. By the end of the third round, I was addicted. I've asked her to do this Sun Salutation every day. Why am I so excited? Because I am the target market for yoga teachers. I'm above fifty and my body is starting to let me know I need to slow down. And Restoraflow is designed to answer to combine yoga with healing in a smooth flowing practice. And I'm excited that a few openings still remain for Sara's retreat in Costa Rica. If you are serious about making a career out of yoga, having clients who are passionate about working with you is where you want to go. Sara and I worked out the details of the marketing plans we'll be sharing with you in Costa Rica. It will put your marketing on auto-pilot. We can't think of anything we've left out. (Sorry. You'll have to deposit the checks from grateful clients all by yourself!) You can find out the details here... Feedback on a Craigslist Ad My name is Amanda. I recently graduated from Sonic Yoga's teaching program and Jonathan Fields recommended your website. It's been very helpful, but I've absorbed so much information from the site that now I'm starting to doubt if what I'm putting out there is right! So I was wondering, if you had some time, if you could run through my ad for Craigslist for private classes. I've been doing wonderfully in the group class arena but I really want to start doing privates, I feel like I could offer so much more to people! So here it is, The headline: Discover the secrets to achieving your best body and a happy, focused mind with Private Yoga Instruction. First rule of Craigslist is never tell them up front it's yoga. They are making a decision without any information. Also, your headline is too long. What does "best body" mean? Try: Secrets To Mind Body Fitness or Increase Your Focus and Tone Your Body or Secrets To Six Pack Abs With Zero Stress I'm a certified Yoga Instructor who has recently become available to take on a few more private clients Tuesdays through Thursday mornings in the Nassau County area, although I am willing to travel a big further for the right client. Okay Amanda. There's the problem. The ad is about you and not about the client. No hard feelings here but the prospect was promised something about a best body and happy focused mind and here is a whole paragraph about you. Remember, everyone's favorite radio station is WIFM - what's in it for me. This is about you. Even to the point of having them fit in YOUR schedule. I don't really need to read further to know the ad bombed. I structure lessons in multiple layers. We'll move through postures with energetic principles in mind, so you're left feeling calm and relaxed. Total nonsense to the client. They don't know what multiple layers are. They don't know what postures with energetic principles means. You're talking to yourself. I choose postures for their health benefits, achieving toned muscles, detoxified organs, and increased flexibility. That's great for you. But what about for your clients? Get it? It seems as if you are talking about yourself. I also incorporate valuable lessons that you'll find yourself coming back to over and over again in your life off the yoga mat. They have no clue as to what you are talking about. Neither do I. And if they don't know what you are talking about. They aren't going to call. And most importantly I structure classes so you'll leave with that glorious yoga BUZZZZ. Do they know what you are talking about? I don't think so. Perfect for the beginner looking to safely begin a yoga practice in a non-judgemental environment with a qualified instructor who will gladly "de-mystify" the yoga process for you. Perfect for the experienced student looking to further his or her practice. You haven't given them specific benefits. And generally experienced students are looking for classes not privates. There are exceptions but aim your ads at beginners. I'll help you find the right tools for getting into the more complicated postures safely, provide hands on adjustments, and help strengthen your mind-body connection. Our sessions can range from gentle and meditative, to restorative and therapeutic, to fiery and active. And the benefits of each of these types are? During our sessions we can decide what will be best for you and your goals. Please e-mail me at xxxxxxx@yahoo.com or call at (516)xxx-xxxx Ok there it is! And Amanda, if you aren't upset with me, register for our forum and look at the numerous critiques of Craigslist ads Sara and I have already done. Of course, if you want me to write a Craigslist ad for you every month, check out our Financial Balance newsletter. I live on Long Island and want to separate from the city, I know the privates are so abundant there but I really want to stay localized on the Island. Possibly in the Hamptons this summer. Well, at least I'll never hear the people there don't have money. Put your ads in the Suffolk County and New York City Craigslist. I would also do pay per click advertising locally near the Hamptons. And bid high because someone searching for you there has the money! I got one response from this ad. From a man in his 50's whose recently quit smoking and wants to start yoga. He emailed me, and I emailed him back asking if he would like to call me. I got a call, they hung up I never got the number and haven't heard from him since. Did you email him back? Okay, I've given you a bunch of info here. Ditch the ad, read some of the old critiques on the forum and start raking in the dough.
