What Are Your Yoga Goals For 2008?

This is a time of year when people make New Year's Resolutions. But due to human nature, these resolutions are usually out of sight and out of mind in just a few days.

But, those people who DO keep their resolutions and use them along the path of self-growth, manage to transform their lives and improve the world around them.

Yoga teachers have the ability and perhaps the responsibility to help change the world - one person at a time or one class at a time.

When you make your goals and commitments public, it may help motivate you to stick to your goals.

When Sara wanted her new car, she went price shopping and posted pictures the car she wanted in her house and on her desk.  She also wrote, "I will be driving this car by...." and put the date.

Of course, the goal came true because your mind constantly directs itself towards a goal.

On our forum, I've started a thread called Goals For 2008.  I've already made the first post and I think you may be surprised by the content.

Please share your yoga goals for 2008 with us.

Here's Where You Go To Share Your Goals

Become An Expert In Restorative Yoga

As yoga comes of age in America, the Baby Boomers are growing older; they are discovering their bodies are aging as well.  And there's a fortune being spent on reversing the aging process.

Here's the sad part: You name the cream, ointment, or spread; if you say it reverses the aging process, it will sell.  It doesn't matter if it works; it will still sell.

Here's the good part:  As a yoga teacher, you know there is something that reverses the aging process which isn't a scam. It's called yoga.  And it effectively helps people regain movement and sensation in their bodies they thought were long gone.

There are many different kinds of yoga to match each person's physical needs.  Some crave the sweat dripping off them in a heated or power Vinyasa flow class.  Others prefer the gentle approach of yin yoga.

Yet the kind of yoga which I predict is going to become very popular is restorative yoga.  By restorative yoga I mean poses designed to "restore" movement to parts of the body weathered by age, illness, or disease.

Restorative yoga can have a dramatic effect on the lives of your clients.  Often producing results they couldn't obtain from doctors, chiropractors or physical therapists.

On any given day, thousands of people are searching for cures to carpal tunnel syndrome  or low-back pain.  And these people who are in pain and hurting are going to turn to you to help them.

And when clients begin to see results and their body beginning to naturally heal,  they are grateful to their yoga teacher for bringing this "magic" into their lives.

And of course, because their yoga teacher has touched their lives, they'll go out of their way to refer you to their friends.

What does this mean to your yoga business?  A great deal.

Most of Sara's clients are repeat business who see her for restorative yoga.  She sees some clients one a week, others several times a week.  And these clients just stick to her like glue because their bodies have begun to heal.

I remember the following case well.  A woman recovering from a fall called Sara and booked her first session.  The woman inquired as to the cost and Sara told her it was $110 an hour.  The woman gulped and said she was seeing a physical therapist and a personal trainer each week already.  But, she was eager to try yoga.

At the end of the first restorative yoga session, she booked Sara for twice a week and got rid of her personal trainer.  She was getting much more out of restorative yoga. Sara was getting her muscles to gently stretch and respond.

So Sara's clients are grateful and word is spreading that yoga just might be the answer to the aging process.

It's a double reward because the clients get exactly what they need to heal their bodies and you get loyal clients who stick with you week after week.  This can have some dramatic results.

Let's return to Sara's client I described above...Sara sees her twice a week for $220 a week.  Assume Sara works with her 50 weeks a year. That's $11,000 from one client.

Here's another case where restorative yoga worked wonders (and it's literally much closer to home)...

My wife is recovering from a hip replacement due to pre-mature arthritis.  She does yoga three times a week or $300 a week.  Assume this yoga teacher sees my wife 50 weeks a year.  That's $15,000 from one client.

At that rate, how many clients do you need?  Because as they make progress in their body, there are not going to stop the yoga that is helping them.

You can work with one or two clients a week and make enough money to be a stay-at-home mom or just have the slower paced life you dreamed up.

You can get up in the morning and see one or two clients, come home and do your practice and have the rest of the day for you!

Valerie, my Ashtanga teacher loves to teach primary series.  But she follows the formula of helping her clients heal their bodies and has a developed a dedicated following of clients - some have been with her for years!  She teaches Primary Series once a week in a yoga studio for the gratification which comes from teaching a class.  But because she has these repeat restorative clients, she gets to spend quality time with her son Charlie and have plenty of time to surf.

And if you build your business with referrals, you can easily fill your schedule - or as much as you want filled - with clients who need restorative yoga.

Plus, if teaching yoga is just something you want to do part time, here's an idea Sara did on a number of occasions: hold restorative yoga workshops at a local studio.  You can rent space for next to nothing and hold your workshops on a weekend when the studio's schedule is light.  You can charge $40-$50 for a multi-hour class and just 20 people in the class gives you $800-$1000 for an afternoon of sharing your gift of yoga with the world and helping people with physical problems.

Can you imagine earning $1000 in a week teaching a restorative yoga workshop!

Picture this scene.  Your restorative workshop has ended.  Your clients are lingering in Savasana enjoying the peace and the internal healing.  As they come to their feet, they come to you with words of thanks or to give you a hug.

And you are the one who made it all happen.

But, here's the problem.  Most yoga teacher training programs don't spend a lot of time on restorative poses.  And there just aren't any books on restorative yoga. That was shocking to me. This is something you must learn from someone who is knowledgeable  - from someone who does it on a daily basis with clients with all sorts of physical challenges.

Sara is the yoga teacher and I'm the marketing guru.  I asked Sara why there aren't more yoga teachers doing restorative yoga.  She told me while many yoga teaching programs do have sections on restorative yoga, many ignore it completely.

So I've asked Sara to do something which should be of interest to many of you.  I've asked her to hold a training for yoga teachers in restorative yoga.

Sara is putting the finishing touches on a yoga retreat to take place in May in Costa Rica.  The details will follow in just a few days.  She has thought of everything including a way you may be able to travel there and back for less than you would pay for a yoga class at a large studio.

Unfortunately - it's quite limited.  In fact, to give people the personal attention teaching restorative yoga requires, Sara has limited this retreat to just 20 attendees.

There's lots more to tell as soon as the remaining details are worked out.  Once again, look for the juicy details in just a few days.

If you've ever dreamed of teaching yoga according to your schedule and touching lives, you'll want to pay attention to the upcoming emails.  It's really designed for the yogi or the yogini who wants to be in charge of their hours, their life, and their finances but feels driven to share their gift with the world.

Here's A Moving Video For You...

When I attended a recent Shiva Rea class, she played an unusual song to take everyone out of Savasana.  I found it on YouTube and wanted to share it with you.  It's well worth watching.  Just beautiful.
